It's that time again! New month, new shows and movies popping up on streaming and premium services. I'm making my list and checking it twice so I don't forget to watch anything from the 2.5 million different streaming options out there.
As always, I'm sharing my personal must-watch list as well as links to full listings of new offerings where available. Great viewing is coming up in August on HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Showtime. And away we go!
HBO – What's New for August 2019
A Black Lady Sketch Show - This comedy sketch show stars Robin Thede and is executive produced by Issa Rae. A host of celebrity guests make appearances as well. Check out the hilarious trailer:
August 3
The Favourite - Olivia Colman won a much-deserved Oscar for her role in this movie, and her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz were nominated for their outstanding performances as well.
August 10
Aquaman - Should be fun? At least I won't pay a rental fee to find out.
August 18
The Righteous Gemstones - John Goodman. This series stars John Goodman, and that alone will make me tune in. It was created by and stars Danny McBride as well. For more details, read this or watch the trailer below:
August 31
Can You Ever Forgive Me? - Melissa McCarthy stepped out of her usual comedy mode (which she always crushes) for this drama based on the life of Lee Israel, a writer who turned to forging letters by famous authors and playwrights to make a living. She crushed this as well, earning an Oscar nom for the role.
Netflix – What's New
for August 2019
August 2
Derry Girls (Season 2) - I'm thrilled this sitcom is back for a second season! It follows a group of friends attending a Catholic girls' school in Northern Ireland in the '90s. They navigate life, school, and family, offset by a background of distrust and violence as the Troubles impact their world. Yet they always stick to the funny no matter how serious the situation.
August 9
GLOW (Season 3)
August 16
Mindhunter (Season 2)
August 30
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
Hulu – What's New for August 2019
August 1
Idiocracy - A science fiction dystopian comedy that must've been written with a crystal ball in hand. And Maya Rudolph's in it!
Star Trek movies galore! - All ten original Star Trek movies, from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) to Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) land on Hulu on Aug. 1.
August 21
This Way Up - This new six-part British sitcom stars Sharon Horgan (of Catastrophe fame) and Aisling Bea, who wrote this series. Check out the trailer:
August 22
A Simple Favor - Fun film (adapted from the book) with a great cast.
Amazon Prime Video –
What's New for August 2019
August 21
A Simple Favor - Yep, it's on Amazon, too!
August 23
Mission Impossible - Fallout
#IMomSoHard - A comedy special by the pair of moms behind the popular web series of the same name. I'd never heard this, but checking out a couple of their videos decided me to tentatively give the Amazon special a go.
Showtime – What's New
for August 2019
August 25
On Becoming a God in Central Florida - As per Showtime, "This dark comedy series stars Kirsten Dunst as Krystal Stubbs, a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes and cons her way up the ranks of the cultish, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her family to ruin in the first place." It also stars Alexander SkarsgÄrd (doing a Southern accent). I'm not entirely sold, but my interest is peaked enough to give it a shot. Here's the trailer:
From the clips on The Black Lady Sketch it looks like it will be hilarious!
