French Exit by Patrick deWitt
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
“Oh, to be youngish and in love–ish.”
The above is my favorite line from the book. It's funny and flip while being something I could honestly imagine someone feeling. It embodies the best of French Exit.
The worst, well, the worst for me was turning the final page and thinking, what the hell did I just read?!
The book is a funny, touching look at some disturbingly messed up people. And the story, for me at least, felt a little messy here and there, too. It was good, but I kept thinking the film version could quite possibly pull that rare switcheroo where it succeeds in being better than the book. It stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges, and the trailer looks good. I'll catch it out when it lands on Netflix or one of the other hundreds of streaming services I subscribe to.
